Our KTG volunteer Ambassador, Zaakirah Nayyar Muhammad, an adult retinoblastoma (RB) survivor, recently spoke at a caregiver training workshop hosted by World Child Cancer in Accra, Ghana, held at the Miklin Hotel.
Sharing her journey as an eye cancer survivor, Zaakirah stood before a room of caregivers and medical professionals, including Dr. Vera Essuman, to remind everyone that the patient’s voice matters in the journey toward healing.
She also demonstrated how she uses the @eyehesive eye patch, sparking meaningful engagement and thoughtful discussion from the audience. She shared her story from referral at just 6 months old, surgery at 9 months, followed by immediate radiation treatment.
Being in a room filled with caregivers who show up every day for children fighting cancer was a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, survivor advocacy, and compassionate care, especially in regions where retinoblastoma and other childhood cancers still carry a high mortality rate.
Thank you, Zaakirah, for continuing to use your voice to inspire hope and awareness.
