Gabriel’s Glow Story

Diagnóstico: Retinoblastoma

Yesenia will tell you that her son, Gabriel, is her favorite superhero.

Gabriel was born a very healthy little boy. For the first year of his life, Yesenia and her husband had no concerns about his physical well-being.  However, just a few months after his first birthday, they began to notice that Gabriel’s left eye was slightly misaligned. They took him to see an ophthalmologist in their country of Ecuador.

The misalignment did not have them overly concerned as he never showed any signs of pain or discomfort. Looking back, Yesenia says they did notice “the Glow” in the pupils of his eyes in flash photos.  But at the time they did not know what this “Glow” (Leucocoria) was indicating. They simply thought it was a problem with the camera.  Once Gabriel was examined by the ophthalmologist, they were shocked to learn that this misalignment and “the Glow” were indicating a very serious condition.  Gabriel had cancer cells in the retina of both his eyes.

This cancer is known as Retinoblastoma and is very serious.

The ophthalmologist suggested that Gabriel receive chemotherapy to fight his cancer. The chemotherapy treatments were not easy, but Gabriel was strong and fought hard against his disease.

After several rounds, it was determined that Gabriel would have to have his eyes enucleated, surgically removed. On June 20, 2012 when he was 2 years and 10 months old,  Gabriel had his surgery. The doctors were not able to save his vision, but they were able to save his life and for that Yesenia and her husband are extremely grateful!

Yesenia says that the adjustment to having a blind child was very frightening.  She did not know how to help him adapt and was very afraid that he would not be happy.

But Gabriel was a warrior.

He was determined not to let his disability hold him back. Gabriel is now nine years old and is very independent and extremely intelligent.  He is the first and only blind student in his school and has done very well both academically and socially. He even made the honor roll!

Gabriel is very social and loves all the activities common to a young boy his age. He loves the beach, the pool, playing in the snow, he likes going to Chuck e-Cheese, riding bikes, and playing Nintendo Wii! Gabriel is also learning English.

Yesenia wanted to share the story of her favorite superhero to help spread awareness of “the Glow.”

She wants all families to know that this sign could be a silent signal of so much more. She strongly encourages families to have their children checked if they notice anything off with their vision. And, most of all, she wants parents to know that a very happy and productive life is possible after blindness.
