Swinging for Sight: The 2nd Annual  Drives For Hope Golf Tournament Empowers Kids Fighting Retinoblastoma

KTG Admin News

What happens when you mix a golf course, a hockey stick, a blindfold, and an incredible community? You get a powerful day of hope, awareness, and life-changing impact.

Recently, Know The Glow proudly partnered with Kids Kicking Cancer-TX Drives for their 2nd Annual Drives For Hope Golf Tournament. This year, our collective mission was clear: bring community awareness to Retinoblastoma (a rare childhood eye cancer) and raise vital funds to provide custom prosthetic eyes for brave young survivors who have lost their sight.

Teams from various charity organizations and local companies stepped up to the tee—not just to play a round of golf, but to truly walk (and swing) in the shoes of the children we fight for.

Ground-Level Advocacy: Spreading the Word at the Know The Glow Tent

At the heart of the tournament’s energy was the Know The Glow information tent, anchored by our dedicated Know The Glow USA Ambassador, Jennifer Villamar-Latif.

Jennifer was on the ground all day, greeting players, connecting with families, and sharing vital, life-saving information about early detection. By educating tournament participants on the specific symptoms and warning signs of Retinoblastoma, Jennifer turned a wonderful sporting event into a critical platform for community health awareness.

Deeply Personal Stakes: Houston Dads Leading the Charge

For the Know The Glow team, this event wasn’t just a professional partnership; it was deeply personal. Our tournament lineup proudly included two local Retinoblastoma dads from Houston. Pictured (Majid L. and Stephen A.)

These fathers know firsthand the emotional and medical roller coaster that comes with a Retinoblastoma diagnosis. Having them on the course, sharing their journeys, and channeling their love for their children into this fundraiser gave the entire event a profound sense of purpose. They are living proof of the strength of our local community.

More Than a Game: Feeling the Glow and the Shadows

Retinoblastoma often robs children of one or both of their eyes to save their lives. To truly bring this reality home for our players, we introduced unique, perspective-shifting challenges throughout the course.

The most eye-opening experience? The Blindfold Challenge.

Imagine stepping up to the ball, hearing only the rustle of the wind, and trying to make contact while completely blindfolded.

This challenge simulated the permanent vision loss that many young Retinoblastoma patients face. It was a humbling, emotional, and deeply bonding experience for every team, reminding everyone exactly why their support matters so much.

Putting the “Fun” in Fundraising: The Happy Gilmore Hole

Of course, a charity tournament needs some joy and laughter—the kind of resilient joy Kids Kicking Cancer fosters every day.

Enter the “Happy Gilmore: Eyes on the Shot” hole. Players swapped their traditional drivers for a hockey stick, channeled their inner Adam Sandler, and gave it their best shot. It was chaotic, hilarious, and incredibly successful.

Best of all? Every single game entry fee went directly toward purchasing ocular prosthetic eyes for children battling childhood cancers like Retinoblastoma.

The Real Impact: Restoring Confidence, One Eye at a Time

While the tournament was a blast, the core of our mission remains urgent. A prosthetic eye does more than just fill a physical space; it restores a child’s confidence, helps them feel like themselves again, and shields them from the social stigmas that often accompany medical trauma.

Because of the incredible generosity of our sponsors, teams, and donors, we are actively turning golf swings into smiles, ensuring that these resilient kids can look into the mirror and see a bright future ahead.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to:

  • Our co-hosts, Kids Kicking Cancer-TX Drives, for their tireless dedication to empowering children.
  • The corporate and charity teams who brought their A-game and open hearts to the course.
  • Our volunteers and donors who made the day run seamlessly.

Didn’t make it to the tournament? You can still help! Awareness is our greatest tool. Remember to check your children’s photos for “The Glow” (a white pupillary reflex instead of the usual red-eye), which can be an early sign of Retinoblastoma. Early detection saves sight—and saves lives.

Together, we are making sure no child faces the dark alone. See you next year for the 3rd Annual tournament!
