Spreading the Glow Across Tanzania: Macho Foundation Dar Expands Awareness of Retinoblastoma

Recently, in August 2025, Macho Foundation Dar, founded by our dedicated Tanzania Ambassador and mother of a retinoblastoma survivor, carried out a series of awareness sessions in government dispensaries across Dar es Salaam, Korogwe, and Tanga with the support of KnowTheGlow. These sessions reached more than 600 people, including healthcare workers, medical students, mothers attending child health clinics, and community members. Participants learned how to recognize The Glow, the white reflex that can be a sign of retinoblastoma and other serious eye conditions.

The initiative began with outreach to four government dispensaries in Dar es Salaam, engaging over 150 mothers and health workers. Encouraged by the response, Macho Foundation Dar was invited to expand the effort, traveling to Tanga and Korogwe for further sessions. At each event, the ambassador carefully documented participants, shared educational resources, and captured videos and photographs to keep the message alive.

The impact of her dedication continues to grow. Invitations are now coming from Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital city, and from Moshi, where she has been asked to address a government-led event attended by national leaders. As both a mother of a survivor and an ambassador, she has become a trusted voice for retinoblastoma awareness. The communities and leaders she engages with are seeing the impact of her commitment to teaching families how to recognize the glow early.

Through Macho Foundation Dar, she is showing how one person’s commitment, strengthened by the support of KnowTheGlow, can help protect the sight and lives of children across Tanzania. As she herself shared: “Thank you for trusting me on creating awareness of The Glow and good things are coming on reaching more people on saving sights.”

We celebrate this incredible progress and look forward to supporting the continued journey of Macho Foundation Dar as it expands awareness across Tanzania.
