Diagnosis: Retinoblastoma
I had very worrying thoughts after noticing “the Glow” in my sons eye when taking a picture. I immediately thought my son had retinoblastoma. It didn’t matter how many times I took a picture, it would still be the same. After searching on google, I came across a website called “Know the Glow” so I thought I would email them with some pictures for advice.
A lovely lady called Kara got back to me and gave me lots of information and a step-by-step guide of what to do next. I took her advice and took my son to our local doctors who did a red eye reflex test on him and she said it looked normal but recommended that we went to an opticians where they would have more advanced equipment to check for this.
During this time, Kara would keep in touch and ask how we were getting on and if we have found out anything. We went to the optician and he said our son has a slight misalignment in one eye which was causing the glow as the light would reflect on it at a different angle than the other eye.
He prescribed him with some glasses and referred him to an ophthalmologist as they are trained to deal with children better and to see what we can do to help with his squint.
We had that appointment before Christmas and everything was fine and normal and we gained a lot of information from it.
Since my first email to Kara in October to now, she has been nothing but brilliant. If she hadn’t heard from me in a while, she would message me just to check that everything was ok and for an update.
I cannot praise her and the rest of the team enough. They are so informative and really go out of their way to help. And although parents will probably always think the worst, there are so many simple reasons as to why some children’s eyes will come up with a glow, like my son’s.
