Introducing Dr. Eniweke Aderemi

Dr. Eniweke Aderemi, a distinguished Nigeria-based ophthalmologist with a strong background in public health, recently had an insightful discussion with Ruth Ngaruiya, Program Manager for Africa, at KnowTheGlow. She shared her passion for ophthalmology and her work with HelpMum, an organization dedicated to improving maternal and infant care across Africa.  In addition, she discussed her plans to creatively merge her practice in ophthalmology with her public health background to create even more impact.

Her multifaceted career seamlessly integrates clinical excellence, digital content creation, and community engagement. Embracing the digital age, Dr. Eniweke extends her reach through various social media platforms under the name @enitheeyedoctor, where she offers insightful videos on eye health topics, making intricate medical information accessible to a broad audience.

When asked about her passion for social media, she explained that it allows her to engage with wider  audiences who are oftentimes uninformed about important topics such as sudden vision loss and retinoblastoma in children, helping to raise awareness about eye health and the importance of proactive eye care.

Dr. Aderemi actively participates in community outreaches in Nigeria, emphasizing preventive eye care and the importance of regular eye examinations. She consistently promotes awareness of quality eye care services, educates the public on eye health, and informs people about available treatment options. She believes in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their eye health while supporting community wellness initiatives.

Apart from her day-to-day clinical practice, she also works with HelpMum Africa as the medical content director, where she contributes to improving maternal and infant health across Africa through community outreach efforts, healthcare worker training and online content creation. HelpMum leverages low-cost technological innovations to provide essential health services to several communities. Through her contribution in crafting educational materials, she empowers mothers and caregivers with vital knowledge, directly impacting health outcomes.

Dr. Eniweke Aderemi exemplifies the integration of medical expertise with digital innovation and community outreach. Her work not only addresses the immediate eye care needs of children and adults but also fosters a more informed and health-conscious society. Through her various roles, she continues to inspire and lead in the realms of ophthalmology and public health education. She considers partnerships with organizations such as KnowTheGlow as instrumental in her efforts to prevent childhood blindness and increase awareness through digital campaigns, physical posters, and educational leaflets. She advocates for awareness initiatives targeted at a wider audience and the social media community to expand eye health education and encourage proactive care.  We are delighted to share about her work to date and look forward to exploring more ways to support her efforts to reach an even wider audience in Nigeria and throughout Africa.
