Introducing Bukenya Martin, Founder and Director of Spero Child International

Bukenya Martin, founder and director of Spero Child International, recently had an insightful discussion with Ruth Ngaruiya, Program Manager at Know the Glow. As a passionate advocate for vulnerable children, Bukenya has dedicated his life to transforming young lives in Uganda and beyond. His unwavering commitment to child welfare and community development has made him a respected leader in the field.

In addition to his work with Spero Child Foundation, Bukenya is involved in clinical research at Mbarara University & Referral Hospital Eye Centre (MURHEC).

Initially his organisation was focused on supporting children with disabilities, the organisation has since broadened its mission to include community health initiatives, particularly eye health awareness and linkages to treatment centers/programs in Uganda. Recognizing a significant gap in knowledge about Retinoblastoma (Rb) and other eye conditions, especially in rural areas, the organisation began raising awareness to promote early diagnosis and treatment.

Spero Child International operates on the belief that every child deserves a chance to thrive. By partnering with local communities, schools, and stakeholders, it has developed sustainable solutions that empower both children and their families. Under Bukenya’s leadership, the organisation has launched initiatives that provide healthcare access through community outreaches, health education, and partnerships with health facilities. It also offers psychosocial support, including counseling services to help vulnerable children and their caretakers overcome challenges and build resilience. Furthermore, vocational training programs for parents and caregivers help strengthen families, creating a supportive environment where children can flourish.

To further its mission, the foundation has leveraged digital platforms such as YouTube and its website to spread awareness about Retinoblastoma and other critical pediatric vision issues. These efforts have reached thousands, emphasizing the importance of early detection and medical intervention.

During his conversation with Ruth Ngaruiya, Bukenya expressed a strong interest in collaborating with Know The Glow, particularly in community awareness programs and educational initiatives on the Glow (medically known as Leukocoria). He stressed the importance of engaging the entire community, not just children, in efforts to improve eye health awareness. However, he also acknowledged the challenge of limited funding, which has temporarily halted some of Spero Child International’s projects. Securing resources remains a priority to ensure the sustainability and expansion of these vital programs.

Despite financial constraints, Bukenya remains steadfast in his mission. His vision is to extend the organisation’s reach, fostering partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals to amplify its impact. His ultimate goal is to create a world where every child has the opportunity to realize their full potential, free from the barriers of poverty and inequality. Through advocacy, education, and community-driven solutions, he continues to champion a future where all children can thrive.
