Africa Updates from KTG Program Manager Ruth: May 2025

Hello from Africa!

We’ve made exciting strides over the months of March and April as we continue growing KnowTheGlow’s presence and deepening our partnerships across the continent.

In March, we successfully concluded our geo-targeted campaign in Uganda. This powerful campaign allowed us to build meaningful relationships with incredible doctors, families, and organizations, all while spreading awareness of “The Glow.” You can read more about this impactful work here: https://knowtheglow.org/uganda.

One of our most inspiring collaborations in Uganda has been with the GAF Eye Health Foundation. Despite operating with a very limited budget, GAF’s weekly outreach programs, patient follow-ups, and training sessions are transforming lives in the Namisidwa community of Eastern Uganda. Their dedication to expanding access to eye care is remarkable. Their YouTube outreach videos are a must-watch—heartfelt stories that highlight the true power of grassroots health advocacy.

In Nigeria, we had the pleasure of connecting with remarkable medical professionals like Dr. Oketta, founder of Cypress Eye Centre. Through our collaboration, she has created educational content on Leukocoria to raise awareness among her followers. We encourage you to view and share her videos at her page : thesightsavvydoc – because every share helps us reach more families and protect more children’s sight.

We also partnered with Dr. Ozy Okonokhua, Head of Management at Okapi Children Cancer Foundation. Throughout May—Childhood Cancer Month the foundation will be  producing weekly educational content to raise awareness about Retinoblastoma and other childhood cancers. Please visit and follow their page: @okapi children cancer foundation_.

Our involvement in Nigeria continues to grow through our work with the Nigeria Optometry Association (NOA) and their national initiative, “My Sight, My Right.” Led by NOA President Dr. Anderson Chimeziri, this campaign provides free eye screenings and promotes vision awareness among school-aged children nationwide. While discussions are still underway, KnowTheGlow aims to contribute digital awareness materials in support of this important mission. Additionally, we’ve been working closely with Pemije Emmanuel Gadimoh, our KnowTheGlow Global Student Chapter Ambassador, to expand student-led initiatives across Nigeria and throughout Africa. We look forward to announcing our university partnerships soon.

In Kenya, our presence has expanded into Kisumu through our partnership with Let Our Children See (LOCS), a registered NGO dedicated to enhancing children’s eye health through early detection, treatment, and advocacy. LOCS continues to run school-based screenings, community outreach, and public education campaigns that align with our shared mission to eliminate avoidable childhood blindness. We are honored to support their incredible work. We also recently connected with Fred Hollows Kenya, an organization doing outstanding work in preventing blindness—look out for their story on our website soon!

KnowTheGlow’s footprint is now reaching even more countries, including South Africa, Gambia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia. In each of these regions, we’re encouraged by the dedication of healthcare professionals, nonprofit teams, and families who are championing early detection and better care for childhood eye conditions. The interest in our work is growing every day—and so is our commitment.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch our Ghana Awareness Campaign on May 15th, running through July 15th. The response from doctors and NGOs has already been amazing, and we can’t wait to share their inspiring stories, powerful partnerships, and impactful journeys in the weeks to come.

Thank you for being part of this movement. Together, we’re making sure no child’s vision is left behind. There’s so much more happening behind the scenes that we haven’t included here, so we encourage you to stay connected through our website and social media pages for more updates and inspiring stories.
