GAF Eye Foundation on 21st March 2025 conducted a school-based eye screening and retinoblastoma awareness training at Bubutu Primary & Secondary School in Namisindwa District. The outreach aimed to assess the eye health of students and staff while sensitizing them on retinoblastoma, a life-threatening childhood eye cancer that can be treated effectively if detected early.
The activity targeted the entire school population of 1,500 individuals. However, only 204 students and staff were screened due to the limited number of personnel and the nature of equipment available, especially those used for refraction. Despite this limitation, the team managed to identify several common eye conditions. Four pupils were found to have refractive errors, while presbyopia was commonly observed among staff members. Other minor issues such as eye strain and infections were also noted.
The outreach revealed key challenges that hindered full participation and impact. A significant number of students missed the screening, which limited the reach of the initiative. The small size of the screening team, inadequate refraction equipment, and transportation challenges were among the main setbacks. In addition, the absence of visual aids during the health education sessions made it difficult for some pupils to fully grasp the information shared. Those diagnosed with chronic conditions or in need of visual aids did not receive treatment or glasses during the visit.
Despite the setbacks, the screening exercise highlighted the urgent need for early diagnosis and correction of refractive errors among students, as well as provision of reading glasses for staff affected by presbyopia. The foundation recommends planning a follow-up screening to reach more students, investing in additional resources to expand the team’s capacity, and procuring more equipment to improve diagnostic efficiency. Strengthening eye health education and awareness efforts remains a priority, especially in remote areas like Bubutu, where access to such services is often limited.
The GAF Eye Foundation remains committed to bridging the gap in eye care services through outreach programs that not only provide screenings but also empower communities with vital knowledge about conditions such as retinoblastoma. With more support and resources, future interventions can have an even greater impact on the lives of schoolchildren and their teachers across the region.
