I’m Robyn, mum to Emmett (4) and his big brother Angus (7), and a proud ambassador for the Know the Glow campaign.
In January 2025, Emmett was diagnosed with group c, unilateral retinoblastoma, at just two and a half years old. Since then, our family has navigated chemotherapy, specialist treatment, procedures under general anaesthetic, a relapse, very stubborn vitreous seeding and countless trips from Canberra to Sydney. While the journey has been incredibly challenging, it has reinforced the importance of awareness, early detection, and ensuring families have access to the information and support they need during difficult times
As a Know the Glow ambassador, I am passionate about raising awareness of the early signs of retinoblastoma, particularly the white glow that can appear in a child’s eye. Early detection can make a significant difference, and I share our story in the hope that it encourages parents to trust their instincts, seek answers, and access treatment as early as possible.
A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and isolating, and I want families to know they are not alone. Whether through sharing our experiences, connecting with newly diagnosed families, or advocating for increased awareness, I hope to provide support, understanding, and reassurance during a difficult time.
Emmett’s treatment journey also highlighted the unique challenges faced by families who live outside major metropolitan centres. The burden of regular travel for specialist care, time away from work, financial pressures, and disruption to family life can add significant stress to an already difficult situation.
These experiences inspired me to establish Closer2Care, a grassroots advocacy campaign focused on improving access to paediatric oncology and haematology care in Canberra and the surrounding region. Through Closer2Care, I engage with government, health services, clinicians, community organisations, and families to advocate for stronger shared-care models that allow children to receive more treatment and support closer to home. www.closer2care.com
I never imagined becoming a cancer mum, an advocate, or a source of support for other families. But Emmett has given me a reason to speak up. He is the reason I raise awareness, support other parents, and share our story. If doing so helps even one family recognise the signs of retinoblastoma earlier, feel less alone in their journey, or access the support they need, then it is worth every conversation.
